Dry More Food Faster! Large vs Medium

This Large freeze dryer will dry more food more efficiently than any competitor on the market. But how does our Large unit compare to our Medium? Let's go over the specs.

Spec Medium Large
Tray Size
Five 9"x13" trays Five 18"x13" trays
Production
Avg 8 lbs. per 24hrs Avg 16 lbs. per 24hrs
Max Load Up to 15 lbs. or 1 gallon Up to 25 lbs. or 2 gallons
Dimensions 20" x 21" x 30" 24" x 25.5" x 34"
Weight (with pump) 110 lbs. 130 lbs.

Specs:

  • Double the tray size/capacity of the Medium model
  • Overall Machine Size: 24" x 25.5" x 34", 130 lbs
  • Up to 25lbs of food per cycle with 16lbs being a normal 24-hour cycle
  • 5 trays.  13x18 standard cookie sheets
  • Average freeze-drying cycles take 12-20 hours
  • 120V, 20A Breaker
  • 17 Amps Maximum Power Draw (1560W max)
  • 12 Amps Average Power Draw (1080W average)
  • Chamber Diameter: 15.7 inches
  • Plexiglass Door Thickness: 1 inch
  • Cubigel Compressor (R1270) - 1/2 HP compressor with 14.3cc displacement (larger compressor = higher cooling capacity = faster batches). This is approximately 28-43% more cooling capacity than competitor brands.
  • 20-24 hour cycle time (compared to 48-72 hours for other brands)
  • Vacuum Pump: Premium Rotary Vane Style, 10-12 CFM, 1 HP

Power Requirments

The Large Freeze Dryer does use a 20 amp Receptacle.  Most receptacles in a house are 15 amps. So you will need a 20 amp breaker and a 20 amp receptacle. Below is a link to the receptacle that is needed.

What makes us Different:

Here at Blue Alpine, we are serious about three things: freeze dryers, quality, and customer service. We have spent the last five years researching, engineering, and testing our freeze dryers to make them the highest quality possible.

Many small improvements add up to a massive difference in quality, and overall, a superior large machine.
  • These are Built In Idaho with the highest quality components.
  • Our refrigeration system uses Cubigel compressors, a trusted name brand with excellent quality and longevity.
  • More cooling capacity (double in our large model), which translates to faster batches (twice as fast as competitors with the large model).
  • A circulating fan inside the chamber blast-freezes the food, creating better quality food and faster freeze times.
  • A P100 filter inside the chamber protects your vacuum pump from particulates, increasing the lifespan of the vacuum pump.
  • Smart software utilizes PID control technology and solid-state relays to freeze-dry your food accurately.
  • We use a natural refrigerant (R1270) that is future-proof, unlike R404 or R410 which will both be discontinued soon.
  • On our machine, all vacuum fittings are barbed fittings. We do not use crimped fittings which are prone to vacuum leaks.
  • We use thread-locker to seal all threads. We do not use Teflon Tape which is also leak-prone.
  • The frame of our machines is made with extruded aluminum and is incredibly durable.
  • Recipes built into the software allow you to optimize your freeze-drying cycles. Candy, for example, can get done in about 2 hours. Fruit, on the other hand, takes about 6-18 hours depending on the load.

Love it

This is my second Blue Alpine, I bought a medium last year and business has taken off to point where medium just could not keep up anylonger.

love this blue alpine...

we love the large blue alpine. everything about it seems quality work they use a check list assembling and pre shipping then send it to the customer.I have nothing to compare to but if you buy a blue alpine first you won't need to compare it to anything.

Just getting started!

I started small on my first batch…120 eggs! They turned out great! I am now running some Bell peppers, onions, cooked shrimp and Tuna steaks! About 7 hours left on that run. Very satisfied!!!!

LOVE our large FD.

The purchase process was amazing, talked to a real person on first call. Unit shipped fast, well packed. Set up was easy. Unit ran as expected, numerous batches complete in the first week. Owned another unit from HR and it is now a brick. Happy camper.

So far so good

Received our large Blue Alpine. It’s beautifulI. Very well packed and palletized. Protected the freeze drier from the heavy rain we were having, while traveling on the open flatbed truck.

We were able to offload it with our neighbors forklift.

I’m going to run the 20a circuit today, probably start playing with it tonight or tomorrow.

Arrival coincides with our moonglow pears starting to drop. So we’re coring, peeling, slicing, and pre-freezing as fast as we can (before the raccoons get them all)
